My PLAB journey and experience

:arrow_left: PLAB 2 Personal Experience

Hello all.
its a great pleasure to be a member of this forum .
i want to share my plab journey over the last one year.
i passed plab 1 with a single attempt in August 2023 and booked a date for plab2 for April 2024.

i had no funds to attend any academy as i felt i could do with the materials i had, moshoby, ups, aspire etc.
i joined a group online where i presented almost daily also joined the early morning mock sessions for the doctors whose exams were close.

I was doing quite well in my presentations on the group and was quite confident that ill scale through in April.
i applied for the UK visa in march and got it easily.
I travelled to UK a week to my exam and stayed with a relative for a few days before going to Manchester a day before my exam.

i had the exam at hardman square and all went well except for some stations that i felt didnt go well.

My results came out and quite shockingly i had passed only 9 stations and had 99 …i felt so bad about this looking at the breakdown of my scores in the various stations, if i got a mark in just about any station id have passed.

Sadly, i resigned to the fact that i failed and booked another date for September 2024.
i realised that i performed badly on management domain, my data gathering and IPS were quite good but management messed everything up.
Also i didnt manage my time well in the stations.

I knew that i had to work on the aspect which was lacking, i had a good knowledge and structure of most stations and cases so i just needed to polish a few rough ends.

i got together a few of us who did the exams earlier in the year but didnt make but were retaking around the same time as me, so we formed a group for daily presentations for at least 3 hours, 2 weeks to our exams we focused on just managing the various cases. We used only the UKMLA moshoby guide.

I went for my trip to UK again 4 days to my exam and stayed at the accommodation provided for keypoints academy clients, i had an online mock with them back in April so we were in touch when i didnt make it.

i booked for a physical mock with DR Ala DSR academy a day to my exam in street .
The mock session was a very great experience and put me in the exam mode immediately.
I went for the exams to the following day with my strategy to ensure i manage every station as best as i could and within 7 minutes.

Everything went well, even though i felt i underperformed in several stations.

Fast forward to last week, my result came out with a score of 113 and passing 13 stations. 4 of my group members also passed this time as well.

This forum also helped me greatly with lovely materials in the verified members including over 100 clips on live sessions of various cases, i applied a lot of things i learnt there in my exams.

Thank you so much.
Anthony.

Hello,
Congratulations on passing! I’m due to sit the exam towards teh end of october and in midst of preperation. If you could - can you please elaborate on how you feel like I can improve my managment? as I feel like it’s something I lack in too…
Any example from your personal experience would be really helpful

Thanks!

Hello there.
To improve your management, you must have a structure that you will follow when managing the patient.
Ensure that you make the diagnosis.
Are you keeping or referring the patient?
What investigations are you doing?
What advice do you have for the patient eg dvla, change of job etc?
what safety net do you have for the patient?

If you have this basic one, you will flow well in the examination, then don’t forget to inform your senior and give a leaflet where necessary.

Then don’t ever forget where you are, ie GP surgery, A and E etc, it will determine what and how you will manage, like if you see a case of MI, you will not manage in the GP surgery.

Hi,
Really inspiring to read your journey. I need tips on how to improve on the management part of the exams. Are they expecting us to be more detailed with the management?

hi there.
Your management carries a lot of weight so focus on it well.
Just ensure your patient is safe and well managed.
You might not know all the details but touch every aspect of your management structure.
